The Lab

PI: Jacob Burbank

Jacob completed his PhD in 2022 under the supervision of Dr. Michael Power from the University of Waterloo and Dr. D Andrew R Drake from Fisheries and Oceans Canada. Jacob's thesis focused the value of understanding the life-history and ecology of imperilled fishes to improve the recovery and conservation efforts, with a focus on the threatened Silver Shiner, Notropis photogenis. He then moved to Moncton, NB to join the Marine Fish and Mammals Section of Fisheries and Oceans Canada Gulf Region and conducts research out of the Gulf Fisheries Centre. Jacob's research focuses on the application of traditional (e.g. examination of basic life-history parameters such as growth and fecundity) and contemporary (e.g. stable isotopes, lipid analysis and modelling) methods to improve the science available for the conservation and management of fishes with a focus on the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence ecosystem. Jacob also serves as an Early Career Researcher Associate Editor with Canadian Journal of Zoology, Associate Editor with Journal of Applied Ichthyology and DFO Secondary Publications Co-Editor in the Gulf Region. Jacob is passionate about ecology and science in general and enjoys serving as a peer reviewer for a wide range of journals. When not doing science Jacob enjoys spending time along the shores of the Northumberland Strait and camping with his wife and two children. Jacob is always looking for students who are interested in conducting exciting research on small pelagics in the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence and beyond in collaboration with universities including but not limited to Université du Québec à Rimouski, University of Waterloo and Université de Moncton
